TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. is the latest foreign parts supplier to open an engineering center in Japan as overseas companies scramble for a bigger slice of that country's auto industry.
TRW opened its three-story, 54,000-square-foot facility in Yokohama on Nov. 9, several weeks after rival Continental Automotive Systems opened its engineering center there. Canadian parts maker Magna International Inc., meanwhile, is hoping to build its own r&d center in Japan to service Toyota Motor Corp.
The common goal: Get in on the ground floor of vehicle development at the source and sell more parts to vehicles being built in Japan and abroad. The push is especially timely as business with U.S. manufacturers wanes with the...
