Aluminum supplier gets hybrid work

DETROIT - Novelis Inc. will supply aluminum sheet for hoods and liftgates on the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid SUVs.

Using aluminum helps offset the SUVs' heavier hybrid powertrains by shedding about 400 pounds from the bodies of standard Tahoes and Yukons.

Novelis has supplied aluminum sheet and foil products to Ford Motor Co. and General Motors. The company is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Ltd., Asia's largest aluminum producer, according to a press release.

Hindalco is the flagship company of the $24 billion multinational conglomerate Aditya Birla Group, of Mumbai, India.
