U.S. sales for Subaru of America Inc. in 2007 fell short of their 2006 mark, but that was no surprise to the automaker.

Tom Doll, Subaru of America executive vice president, said here at the auto show that Subaru initially forecast lower sales figures for 2007 because "we had so much of our product line in transition.''

He added, "We had to balance out the old inventories we had in order to provide for the new ones.''

Doll said he expects 2008 to be better for sales in the United States, forecasting totals of about 200,000 vehicles, up from 187,000 in 2007.
