When the White House denied a request for up to $10 billion in additional aid to suppliers, it cleared the way for another supply chain shakeout. Ultimately the result will be a stronger, more competitive automotive supply base. But in the near term, the consolidation means that it's every company for itself.
Suppliers have been suffering from margin pressure for years, even when volume was higher. Now, with no loans or loan guarantees coming from Washington, suppliers must continue to restructure themselves radically, just as their customers are doing. Suppliers also must improve efficiency by seeking partners through mergers, acquisitions and other creative relationships.
And they must compete aggressively for new customers and for new business...
