RecordTV.com, a pioneer in Internet-based VCR services, announced that it has settled its U.S. federal lawsuit with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and its members.

The MPAA sued RecordTV.com in July 2000 for copyright infringement, seeking damages of $150,000 for each television show recorded through the Internet. RecordTV.com filed a counter-suit, asking the court to declare that an online software-based VCR is just as lawful as a "traditional" video recorder.

As part of the agreement, RecordTV.com will not pay damages, but only $50,000 compensation as partial payment for the studios' attorneys fees. Record TV has agreed not to implement its online VCR for programs owned by the major studios unless it obtains a written agreement....
