According to printed reports, an unknown company has applied for permission to launch a new pay-TV movie channel in Canada, ending a two-company monopoly that has resided in the territory for two decades.

Canada's pay-TV market has been run by Astral Media and Corus Entertainment. Astral has a monopoly over premium pay-TV movies in the East, with The Movie Network (TMN); and Corus has a monopoly in the West with Movie Central. The network is expected to air mostly first-run Hollywood and overseas movies with the minimum required Canadian Fare.

Many expect the enigmatic company to be Bell ExpressVu, which is owned by BCE, the majority owner of Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail.
