ORBITING DEC COMPUTER PROVES WORTH OF COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE IN SPACE

DEC Says Future Space Station And Satellites Can Save Money By Using Commercial Packages

Digital Equipment Corp. says one of its specially designed VAX computers was aboard the US Space Shuttle Discovery during its last mission as part of a NASA experiment to test the use of commercial computer software technology in space.

Orbiting the globe in the shuttle cargo bay was a ruggedized version of the VAX 6000 produced by Raytheon Co. under a DEC license. The successful tests verified that standard VAX commercial architecture and software, VMS and ADA language, can survive the harsh environment of space.
