Are IBM Alliances, Apple Suit, FTC Probe And Fierce Competition Rattling Mr. Gates?

A lot of people in the computer industry both fear and dislike Bill Gates for allegedly using unfair tactics against rivals and turning on allies. As a result, the Microsoft Corp. chairman seems to think his PC software powerhouse is surrounded by attackers who must be cleverly thwarted or at least re-educated.

"Our nightmare of IBM attacking us in system software, Novell defeating us in networking and more agile, customer-oriented applications competitors getting their Windows act together is a reality," Gates says in a recent internal memo to top Microsoft executives.
