North American software retail sales up sharply, latest SPA survey shows. (Software Publishers Association)

Retail sales of PC application software in North America increased to $1.22 billion in the 1992 first quarter, up 19.8 percent over the same period in 1991, the latest Software Publishers Association survey indicates.
SPA says Windows and Mac application sales were up sharply -- Windows, $311 million for the quarter, up 98 percent; Mac, $216 million, up 51 percent. Still, DOS remained the largest-selling format in the North American market with sales of $647 million, even though the DOS market share decreased by four percent from the 1991 first quarter.
SPA says a number of newly reported categories grew most rapidly in the first quarter -- utility software, $90 million, up 74 percent; presentation graphics and drawing/painting packages, $62.7 million...
