Interactive 3D Simulation System Will Help Astronauts Dock Shuttle More Accurately, Safely

Researchers at the NASA Ames Smart Systems Group have developed a novel 3D interactive space shuttle/space station docking simulation, using solutions developed by Engineering Animation Inc. and The MathWorks Inc.

NASA's simulation, which combines the power of EAI's WorldToolKit and The MathWorks' MATLAB, is a first step in the design phase of a "smart controller," a computerized joystick control with various types of feedback expected to aid in safer and more efficient docking of space shuttles to the International Space Station now under construction.

"WorldToolKit brings to life the precise mathematical and physics calculations solved by MATLAB....
