At its 15th Congress in Madrid the London-based World Energy Council (WEC) urged countries to continue the development of nuclear power as a way of providing sustainable supplies of energy. The Congress was attended by more than 450 delegates.

At the conclusion of the 5-day Congress, the WEC issued a series of conclusions and recommendations. One conclusion noted that |sustaining and developing the world's capabilities to deploy nuclear energy safely and without undue public concern' stands among three main activities for achieving sustainable energy supplies. The WEC also recommended rational energy conservation by consumers and programmes encouraging the use of renewable energy sources.
