Two of the crown jewels of America's national park system, the Grand Canyon in Arizona and Yosemite in California, are set to become showcases for environmentally friendly, energy-wise housing of the future. The US Department of Energy, through its National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, and the National Park Service, are working together on plans for the construction in 1993 of one prototype, energy-efficient employee housing unit for each park.

The two sites offer NREL engineers different design challenges but the same opportunities to highlight building techniques that are effective and practical, without sacrificing comfort.
