Czech GM crop tests given green light.(Czech Republic)(Genetically modified )(Brief Article)

Czech environment minister Libor Ambrozek has rejected a legal bid by Greenpeace to impose a temporary ban on testing of genetically modified (GM) maize in the Czech Republic, reports AgraFood East Europe.

The pest-resistant maize variety MON810 was approved by the Czech government for testing early in 2004. The minister's ruling means that Monsanto, the American biotechnology giant, can now continue its three-year testing programme in the Czech Republic.

The GM maize can be sown commercially for the first time in the country this year, and the Czech Agricultural Union said several dozen farmers were planning to do so.
