US report on beef regulation failure "insufficient".(Markets)(Brief Article)

Japan has dismissed the latest US report into the cause of a recent lapse in beef export rules as "insufficient", and will need more time to reach a further decision on the resumption of US beef imports.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced at the end of last week that the presence of specified risk materials (SRMs) in a consignment of beef destined for Japan happened as a result of "confusion" over the export rules.

However, the companies which supplied and shipped the meat, Atlantic Veal & Lamb and Golden Veal, had confirmed on January 6 that both understood the export requirements.
