Agra Europe, July, 2006

The Russian and US were locked in intensive negotiations this week as part of a bid to strike a bilateral trade deal on Russia's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) at this weekend's Group of Eight (G8) Summit in St. Petersburg.

US Trade Representative Susan Schwab and Russian Economy Minister German Gref held two days of talks in Moscow before flying to St Petersburg on Friday.

"We are going to continue to negotiate throughout the day," a spokesman for Schwab said. "There are still several issues that are unresolved but Ambassador Schwab and Mr Gref will continue to talk."

President Vladimir Putin was due to continue the negotiations with George W. Bush later in the day.
