A French farmers' union and the biotechnology company Monsanto have condemned the destruction of two experimental maize plots in central France and another in eastern France last Sunday night, Terre-Net reports.

Monsanto said the loss of the genetically modified (GM) crops in Loiret and Moselle, along with others destroyed previously, could in the short term, deprive France of the innovation needed for a profitable and sustainable agriculture sector.

The company would now be forced to rely more on data obtained in other countries when applying for permission to run trials or to market seeds and fertilisers.
