Hydro project marks new start for Kap.(SPECIAL REPORT: ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT)

A $70 million hydroelectric development near Kapuskasing represents a promising avenue of economic development, says town mayor Alan Spacek.

In the coming months, Quebec-based Hydromega Inc. is due to build a series of four hydroelectric "run of the river" generating stations along the Kapuskasing River, which would generate a total of 20 megawatts (MW) to be sold to the Ontario Power Authority.

With the development of a billion-dollar series of Ontario Power Generation (OPG) projects north of Kapuskasing also due to begin within the next couple years, the town is looking to become a central nexus for energy generation.
