In 1992, Rirkrit Tiravanija turned the organization of Gallery 303 in New York upside-down by emptying the offices and storage areas so as to exhibit their contents in the spaces usually reserved for presenting artworks. He then proceeded to turn the offices into a cafeteria where he prepared and served food to visitors. The work was "entitled" Untitled 1992 (Free). Tiravanija -- of Thai origin, born in Argentina in 1961 and who now divides his time between New York and Berlin -- has subsequently become known for his makeshift kitchens -- Coleman stoves and other such camping appliances, boxes, crates and sacks of provisions -- which he installs in galleries, museums, and other exhibition spaces, and that he either generously attends to himself or makes available to...
