World Cup causes friction in Uganda

Ugandan television channel UTV has been given green light to mount a legal challenge against rival broadcaster Sanyu Television for transmitting World Cup football live in Uganda. UTV, as a partner of African Radio and Television Broadcasting Union (URTNA), claims sole rights to transmission of tournament after signing agreement with URTNA to that effect.

However, Sanyu claims that it has rights indirectly through an affiliate station in Nigeria that is also licensed by URTNA to broadcast games. Row is growing as UTV World Cup Committee wants to impose a UGS 3m ($2,500) charge against Sanyu for each game shown.
