UK telco Cable & Wireless is to invest $1.4bn over five years to create an optical fibre network in Japan that will deliver advanced Internet and data services to business customers. Network will connect around 80 cities in all 47 prefectures; metropolitan networks in Tokyo and Osaka will use a mixture of fibre optic, DSL and LMDS technologies.
Cable & Wireless (UK; 44/ 207 315 4495; www.cwplc.com) cited research claiming that $11,000m market for business IP and data services in Japan is forecast to grow to $28,000m over next five years. Business IP and data traffic in Japan is forecast to grow from around 9m terabits to around 52m terabits a year, over same period.
