US arm of Japanese video games company Sega has closed its Internet service provider (ISP) unit. SegaNet customers will be transferred to rival ISP Earthlink. SegaNet was launched in September 2000 and Sega spent an estimated $100m in developing the system. In addition to traditional ISP functions SegaNet was formed as an interactive games platform--to date 26 PC and Dreamcast games have been SegaNet-enabled. SegaNet is estimated to have had approximately 200,000 subscribers. However, majority avoided the $21.95 monthly fee by switching between free trial accounts. Sega (Japan; 81/3 3743 7522; www.sega.co.jp) continues to offer support for Internet-enabled games via its website.
