Eight Japanese companies have formed iVDR Hard Disk Drive Consortium to establish common platform for removable hard-disk drives for computer and entertainment products. Founding members of iVDR (information versatile disk for removable usage) include Canon, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Pioneer, Sanyo, Sharp Victor Company of Japan (JVC) and Pheonix Technologies (Japanese division of Phoenix); FCI Japan and Mitsumi Electric Company expect to join also. Basic format is 2.5-inch drive (130mm x 80mm x 12.7mm), housing twoplatter drive and space for shock absorber and security system. iVDR file system is UDF, same as used for optical discs, rather than Windows-based; 50-pin connector must withstand 10,000 insertions and extractions.
