Indian telco plans multi-terabit cable systems.(PRODUCTS)

Indian telco Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) plans to build two new multi-terabit submarine cable systems valued at around $600m. VSNL intends to build an Intra-Asia cable as well as one from India to Europe. The Intra-Asia cable will link Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. VSNL plans to commence construction of the new cable by December 2006 leading to completion in early 2008.

The cable system between India and Europe will also provide connectivity to Africa and the Gulf region. The new cables will interconnect with VSNL's existing global network that has over 20 Tb of capacity. In particular, Intra-Asia cable will enhance the link between the company's Tata Indicom Cable from Chennai to Singapore and TGN Pacific Cable from Japan to the US. The new cables...
