A document management system doesn't have to be a high priced system with all the frills. For smaller firms, it can be as simple as a scanner and a typical desktop computer, says Bruce Andersen, a sole practitioner based in Woodland Hills, Calif. For many simple returns, use of a full-fledged documentation system is not justified.
"It's overkill," Andersen says. Andersen's point is that since the audit rate for his clients is about the same as the national average 1 percent to 1.5 percent of returns, he has a half dozen audits or less each year.
