The easiest way to study the impact of document management on accounting and tax firms is to count the monitors that have proliferated on their desks. From large firms to small ones, the use of dual monitors on preparers' and reviewers' desktops has become a widespread practice. It's almost a standard.
"Once you get used to using two monitors, you can't go back. You get used to the additional work space," says David Primes, a partner with Sobul, Primes & Schenkel, a Los Angeles-based CPA firm. "It makes a big difference." Two factors are fueling the trend: Displays are relatively inexpensive, and the need to view digital images means preparers use one screen to display the return and the other for comparing supporting documents.
