"Paperless" may be the term du jour, but it's a bit of a misnomer for CPA firms and clients alike. There are many valuable tools available that diminish the need for hard-copy documents, but truly paperless accounting, tax preparation and financial services processes are still some way off in the horizon.

There are numerous advantages to embracing document management techniques and workflow products that require less paper, and many accounting firms have already put such systems in place. And many of those who haven't are strongly considering doing so. Nonetheless, the transition to less paper may be easier for accountants than their clients. Getting clients more comfortable with fewer hard-copy documents may take some doing. Many clients have become comfortable communicating through email, but they are still a long way from managing their accounts, financial statements, tax returns, and other work online.
