She didn't get balloons and a light show, but "Mrs. W" still earned a prize as a landmark patron of the Identity Theft Assistance Center. She won her name back. Two housecleaners had pilfered her wallet and in less than two months had opened up a fraudulent account using her identity. By the time the 83-year-old was put in touch with ITAC, there were at least 16 other attempts at creating sham lines of credit with her personal information.

It would have taken months, likely years, for her to clean up the mess on her own. But ITAC, which coordinated fraud alerts and corrections with her creditors and the bureaus, had her identity restored before she hung up the phone this past March.
