It may be a long time—like never—since you’ve heard anyone singing the glories and praises of suspicious activity reports, but there they were, a panel of four FBI agents yukking it up and telling bankers how great they are for filing the 567,000 SARs sent in by banks last year.

It was a little surreal. “Since the FBI considers SARs to be like informants, and we normally pay informants, I’m here to pay you,” deadpanned FBI special agent Eugene Casey. “Not with money, unfortunately, Congress hasn’t given us a budget yet for this fiscal year, but to pay you compliments and my respect.
