Company celebrates anniversary with intense program of giving back

Cultural norms on the West Coast spread eastward, so they say. If this is true, then corporate-sponsored "days of caring" eventually could become the norm. "Days of caring" is a concept embraced by Portland, Ore. insurance giant Standard Insurance Co. to celebrate its centennial and to promote community bonding.

The company has always offered a paid volunteer day to its employees. However, they previously were only available during the summer. This year, for some very important reasons, The Standard has organized activities over a full 12 months and widely expanded its list of non-profits.
