As if we didn't have enough economic and business problems to worry about, this summer brings the prospect of mayhem by Mother Nature. Hurricane season begins this month, and meteorologists are forecasting another year of above-average storm activity. Meanwhile, media reports indicate that federal and state disaster officials aren't much more organized than they were before Rita, Katrina and Ira racked up thousands of deaths and billions in damage.

Concern also is rising among health experts about Asian bird flu. Scientists think it's only a matter of time before the avian flu known as the H5N1 strain will mutate into a form that spreads easily among people, potentially sparking a global bird flu pandemic.
