Re-energizing vacations

Canadian and U.S. employers searching for exotic ways to produce loyal, committed employees may want to take some time off to revisit their vacation benefits.

While a generous or innovative vacation policy is only one component of an attractive total rewards package, there is considerable evidence that vacations matter. In a study of employee benefit trends released last fall, MetLife reported that U.S. workers sweat the big stuff, including health care, disability and retirement, but 64% of full-time employees value paid vacation days significantly more than income protection and pension benefits.

Helene Letzler, a Toronto recruiter specializing in benefits, says age typically influences the way recruits view prospective employers' vacation policies.
