Tucker Anthony and Sutro Merge
On Wall Street, June, 2001
Tucker Anthony Sutro is creating a new brokerage firm - Tucker Anthony Sutro. In what may be one of the least radical but more confusing name changes in recent memory, Sutro & Co., the firm that underwrote San Francisco's cable cars in the 1870s, will merge in September with its sister firm in Boston, the 109-year-old Tucker Anthony Inc. Sutro's 250 brokers at 17 branches will join Tucker Anthony's 650 brokers at about 60 branches to form a new entity, Tucker Anthony Sutro, which is the current name of the firms' parent.
At the same time, the other brokerage units of the parent - Gibraltar Securities, Branch Cabell & Co., Hill Thompson Magid & Co., Freedom Capital Management Corp., and Cleary Gull Investment Management Services - will retain their individual names.
