Humana's clearly trying to put the human touch back into health services. Even with a market cap of nearly $11 billion, the Louisville, Ky.-based conglomerate is trying to recharge each and every subscriber. New ideas? These range from hiring ethnographers to study what clients think and how they interact with the healthcare system, to a deal with Virgin subsidiary, Virgin Life Care, which turns subscribers' daily walks into perks. Humana's chief innovation officer, Dr. Jack Lord-a former forensic pathologist who clocks about 18,000 steps a day on his pedometer-believes every health services firm should follow his company's lead. And subscribers at Humana's competitors may start making some vigorous demands soon.
