In the pines and high country of central Oregon, they're still trying to dig out from winter storms a few months ago that tore across the Cascades. Adding up the costs for the transportation department means 90,000 cubic yards of sand, reportedly enough to cover an entire football field to a depth of 50 feet.

For Umpqua Bank retail evp Richard Carey, it adds up to about 12 percent. That's what he was running for waived bounced check fees during the storm, up a good four points from the normal eight percent. His thinking was that with ice and trees down on the road, people were having a harder time getting to the bank, so maybe a break was in order for check bouncers. Civilized.
