MasterCard reported it had 567 million debit cards in circulation at the end of the first quarter of this year, an 8.3% increase over the same period one year earlier. The debit activity coincides with both an increase in the number of debit terminals at merchant locations (now 8.8 million), and with a surge in online debit purchases. MasterCard said that during the past year online debit purchases in the U.S. grew 459%.
