American single-seater racing powers back into life this weekend with the Toyota Indy 300 at Homestead, Miami, the first round of the 2004 Indy Racing League.

Much in the League has changed over the winter, but the story that attracted all the headlines was IRL boss Tony George's attempt to buy the assets of the rival ChampCar series after it went bankrupt. All in the IRL will tell you that George intended to unite US single-seater racing after decades of strife, but those in ChampCar believed any purchase would have led to IRL's rival being quickly snuffed out.

We'll never know, because George failed and ChampCar still exists under the new name of the Open Wheel Racing Series, intending to run a championship starting in April. The series is, however, a shadow of...
