BOY SCOUTS AND GIRL SCOUTS

From their early-twentieth-century inceptions, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America have dealt differently with issues relating to homosexuality. In the 1980s and 1990s, this came to a head as the Girl Scouts made formal gestures toward inclusion while the Boy Scouts moved to exclude all gay people.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), incorporated by William Boyce in 1910, brought together features of General Robert Baden-Powell's military-style Scouting program in England and a more nature-oriented "Boy Scouts" group led by Ernest Thompson Seton in the United States. As part of the "muscular Christianity" movement, the BSA sought to strengthen boys' masculinity by toughening their moral and physical fiber....
