Adams signs free-agent deal with Panthers

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent linebacker Keith Adams yesterday to add depth at a position that has been decimated this offseason.

Carolina lost two starters this winter - Will Witherspoon signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Rams and Brandon Short was released in a salary-cap move.

Adams, who started 16 games last season for the Eagles and had a career-high 101 tackles, is expected to compete with Thomas Davis and Adam Seward for the outside linebacker spot. A native of Atlanta, Adams played at Clemson and was a finalist for national defensive player of the year in 1999 and 2000.
