ANY WAY you look at the death of Danieal Kelly, it's an outrage of monstrous proportions. As the Inquirer documented last week, the bedridden 14-year-old with cerebral palsy died in a stifling heat wave last summer while under the protective care of the city's Department of Human Services. But here's perhaps the most outrageous aspect of this appalling case.
Although two top DHS officials lost their jobs in part because of Danieal's death, although the private contractor responsible for providing her services has been terminated, the consequences to Danieal's primary caregiver - her mother - may well be this: She'll get very, very rich. On your money. Because although Danieal allegedly wasted away, developed bone-deep bedsores and died while living with her mother, according to the Inquirer, Andrea Kelly has hired a lawyer to sue the city for her daughter's death.
