BCS polls stacked against upstart Rutgers

THEY ARE A cute little story. If you are truly a fan of Rutgers football - however truly new - that line ought to tick you off more than tickle you. Because as it stands now, it is your team's most formidable opponent this season. Like undefeated Boise State, the 8-0 Scarlet Knights are in the teens in the national rankings, no matter who is voting or what computer is used.

Rutgers is 13th in the latest BCS poll, Boise State is 14th. That the school that initiated the sport has experienced little success playing it over the last 100 years is well documented. The Knights have been to two bowl games, the Garden State Bowl in 1978 and the Insight Bowl last season, losing both times to Arizona State. Less defined, to me at least, is why that should matter to this team or its fans this season. And ...
