Officer James N. Mason died serving the people he loved. Mason, 35, was a beacon of inspiration for residents of Mantua in West Philadelphia while he was assigned to the 16th District. As he often did, Mason settled a dispute between a landlord and a tenant on May 7, 1981, and was sitting in his patrol car, filling out paperwork, when a sniper's bullet tore into his head.

The shot was fired from the Mantua Hall Housing Project on Fairmount Avenue near 36th Street. A suspect was arrested but later acquitted. Mason died three days later.
