25 years later, a tribute

Officer James N. Mason died serving the people he loved. Mason, 35, was a beacon of inspiration for residents of Mantua in West Philadelphia while he was assigned to the 16th District. As he often did, Mason settled a dispute between a landlord and a tenant on May 7, 1981, and was sitting in his patrol car, filling out paperwork, when a sniper's bullet tore into his head.
The shot was fired from the Mantua Hall Housing Project on Fairmount Avenue near 36th Street. A suspect was arrested but later acquitted. Mason died three days later. Yesterday, fellow cops, including members of Mason's Police Academy class, his family and neighbors gathered at the scene of the shooting to pay tribute during the dedication of a plaque honoring Mason."After 25 years, we still have scars," said Mason's brother, Broderick. "It's not easy standing here, but the joy is here this morning ...
