COLLEGE BASKETBALL HAS never been more important to a metropolitan area enduring the 12-win Flyers and 14-win

Sixers.

There are undying loyalties, sure, but most people follow all of the Big 5, and wish for success for all. We've been fortunate the past few years, with Saint Joseph's and Villanova making serious runs to the Elite Eight.

This year's success, if any, will come with a different texture. Maybe there will be an upset everybody can love. That's so because we seem to be lacking any kind of team to make noise on the national stage.

We bring this up because yesterday we ran across the famous RPI rankings, those murky, indecipherable numbers that will influence selection of the NCAA Tournament field.
