Ohio State, South Florida riding high atop first BCS standings

If the national-title game was being held tomorrow, Ohio State (7-0) would be playing South Florida (6-0).

Yes, USF, which didn't have a program until a decade ago, and didn't compete at the I-A level before this century.

But since it's only Oct. 15, there's still a half season to play. And if we've learned anything from the first 7 weeks, it's that nothing is etched in concrete. Just ask Stanford. Or was that Oregon State?

Anyway, the first Bowl Championship Series standings were released yesterday. They're the only numbers that will count, when it comes to determining who plays on Jan. 7 in the Louisiana Superdome.

The BCS formula uses two polls -  USA Today  (coaches) and the Harris Interactive (media and college-football folks) - as well as an average...
