30th Street outage leads to delays

A power failure late yesterday afternoon in 30th Street Station caused about 10 trains to be delayed as Amtrak workers struggled to board passengers in the dark.

The longest train delay was 45 minutes, said Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Ronero, but the average was 10 or 15 minutes.

The outage began at about 5:15 p.m., according to Peco Energy spokesman Ted Caddell. Power was restored at about 6:20 p.m., although a visitor to the station last night found the interior still gloomy.

There was a report that a woman was stuck in a stalled elevator, but was not injured.

Although the cause of the outage was being investigated, it appeared that a fire had damaged power lines.

Ronero said there were about 300 passengers in the station when the power failed....
