GMs recommend use of replay for home runs

ORLANDO, Fla. - Pat Gillick was general manager of the Baltimore Orioles when, in Game 1 of the 1996 American League Championship Series against the Yankees, a 12-year-old fan named Jeffrey Maier reached over the fence and interfered with a fly ball hit by Derek Jeter in the eighth inning.

The ball was ruled a home run, tying the score and the Yankees went on to win both the game and the series.

But that's not why Gillick is for instant replay for home runs, which big-league general managers voted, 25-5, in favor of during their annual meetings yesterday at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress resort.
