Ed Moran: NHL games in Europe not the world's greatest plan

THE NHL announced last week that it will send four teams to Europe to open the regular season and then have the New York Rangers play an exhibition against a Russian team.

It's a fun idea, one that probably has to do with thoughts of

expanding the league into the

European market. But wouldn't a competitive international tournament be more attractive?

The plans call for the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins to open next season with games Oct. 4 and 5 in Stockholm, Sweden, with the Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning to play the same nights in Prague, Czech Republic.

The Rangers also would play Russian Super League champion Metallurg Magnitogorsk on Oct. 1 for the Victoria Cup, a new annual event created by the International Ice Hockey Federation as...
