Flyers likely to select budget defenseman in NHL draft

This year's NHL entry draft might be one of the deepest ever in terms of available defensemen, but don't look for the Flyers to solve their blue-line needs this weekend.
The Flyers need another puck-moving offensive defenseman. And when the league opens the free-agent market July 1, the Flyers will be D shopping.
Among the available top free-agent defensemen this year are San Jose's Brian Campbell and Ottawa's Wade Redden. But both will demand more in salary than the Flyers would be willing to pay.
They went the high-end, free-agent route last season with Kimmo Timonen and Daniel Briere, and it is unlikely they will do that again.
