Every sign coming from the Phillies indicates they expect to be active players once this summer's pretrading deadline action heats up.
General manager Pat Gillick told reporters yesterday that he and the rest of the Phillies front office already have identified the needs they hope to address before season's end.
Though he did not detail those plans, pitching is one area the team would like to upgrade, particularly with the ongoing struggles of Brett Myers, whom they had hoped would establish himself as a strong No. 2 to complement Cole Hamels.
