Flyers put free-agency plans in motion

LONG AFTER he should have been home having dinner, Paul Holmgren was in his Voorhees, N.J., office working the phones and looking for deals.
The NHL free-agent market was set to open at midnight, and the Flyers general manager sounded like he was going to be there when it did.
"There's a couple of areas that we would like to address. We have lists and we'll start chipping away at that when the clock strikes 12," Holmgren said yesterday.
It has been no secret that for the Flyers, the most important of those areas is defense.
But Holmgren made it clear that he has wide-ranging plans. "There are a couple of things we would like to do up front just to see if we can help ourselves," he said.
