The discovery of Turkey by international tourists is an event of the most recent vintage. As if awakening from a slumber, the world learned in the 1970s that (surprise!) Turkey had Troy, Ephesus, Angora, Cappadocia, Pergamon - more ancient Greek and Roman ruins than Greece and Israel combined-as well as 5,000 miles of saltwater coastline, craggy mountains, charming villages, some of the tastiest food in the world, and friendly people who like hosting American visitors.
For the past decade in particular, Turkey has had the fastest tourism development of any country in the world. And yet, despite the flood of visitors, it remains one of the best value-for-money destinations of all. Why?
